Insights and Stories from an Evaluation of Family Voices of California’s Project Leadership
Family Voices of California (FVCA) works to ensure quality health care for children with special health care needs. Its Project Leadership program trains and supports families to share their stories and advocate for more equitable health systems improvements. Since 2013, the program has trained more than 1,000 graduates, creating a network of diverse families working at all levels of community and government to improve policies, systems, and services that support children with special health care needs.
In 2023, the Lucile Packard Foundation for Children’s Health (LPFCH) and FVCA partnered with Engage R+D to evaluate the Project Leadership training program. The evaluation included a survey and interviews with program graduates and trainers, and interviews with government, nonprofit, and media partners. Throughout this process, Engage R+D worked closely with an advisory group of program graduates and trainers as well as FVCA and LPFCH staff to decide how to best capture impact, include family perspectives, and interpret the findings. This report includes findings and recommendations from the evaluation.
